About Alphabet Street
What kind of qualifications do I have to have to get a job a…
We prefer to hire people who have a background in education, as well as some experience with children, but we will consider applicants who are interested in, and passionate about, teaching. If you love children and have completed an undergraduate degree, you are qualified.
What kind of training will I receive?
Orientation is provided upon arrival at the school. You will also observe other teachers’ classes before you take over your own. Alphabet Street holds biannual workshops to keep teachers abreast of our classes and curriculum at each level.
What is the work schedule like?
You will teach kindergarten classes in the morning and elementary classes in the afternoon. The specifics depend on your daily schedule.
What can I expect in terms of vacation time?
In addition to Korean national holidays, there are two vacations of about five days, each calendar year. There is a winter vacation that covers Christmas and New Years, as well as a summer vacation. Many teachers use these vacations as opportunities to continue their travels within Asia.
What is the school’s dress code?
Alphabet Street does not have a very strict dress code. Clothing should be tasteful, like a business casual, but T-shirts are permitted, provided the subject matter of the shirt isn’t profane.
What kind of housing does the school provide?
All foreign teachers are provided with a one bedroom apartment located near the school. The apartments include a kitchen and a bathroom, and are furnished in a Western style with an air conditioner, refrigerator, stove, microwave, bed, desk, and chairs. All housing is paid for with the exception of utilities (such as electricity, gas, internet, etc.).
What should I pack?
There are many convenience stores, like 7Elevens, and retail shops, like Wal-Mart, and Costco, so you should be able to find most everything that you need. However, you may want to look into whether Korea carries any brand specific medications you need, and bring enough for your term if necessary.
In addition to bringing clothing appropriate to Korea’s cold winters and hot summers, some people also say that it can be difficult to find some bigger sized clothes and shoes in Korea. So keep that in mind, too.
Where is the school located, and what is the area around the…
The school is located in Bangbae, Seocho-gu, Seoul, within easy reach of museums, gyms and hiking paths. It is a residential neighbourhood, but, as throughout Seoul, it has many restaurants, as well as convenience and grocery stores. It only takes about twenty minutes to get to the Han River in central Seoul.
How far is the school from public transportation?
The school is very close to every kind of public transportation. Bangbae Station, on the 2nd line, and Naebang Station, on the 7th line, are the closest subway stations, each only a five minute walk from the school. It is also within walking distance of the 4th line. For a map of the Seoul subway, please refer to www.seoulmetro.co.kr
What is it like to live in Korea?
Korea is a beautiful country. There are many interesting places to go, and it’s easy to visit different areas of the country over a weekend, so your experience of Korea does not have to be limited to Seoul. That said, you don’t have to leave Seoul to find places of interest, as the city is filled with them. From outdoor adventures to museums and entertainment, Korea has it all.
What are the Korean people like?
Many visitors to Korea say that Koreans are very kind and eager to help others. While Koreans can be conservative, they are receptive of foreigners in their kindness.
What is Korean food like?
Korean food is spicy, hot, and delicious. Meals are always served with vegetables and many different kinds of side dishes. The Korean meal most popular among foreigners is galbi, which is thin slices of barbequed meat. Despite all the vegetables in Korean cuisine, vegetarians and vegans might have some difficulties finding dishes that fit their diet. That said, many Western restaurants and chains can be found in Korea; McDonalds, Dunkin Doughnuts, Starbucks and TGIF, among others.
What is the weather like in Korea?
Korea has four distinct seasons. In the winter the temperature goes down to -10°C, which means is can get quite cold, but in the summer it gets up to 30°C and it’s very hot and humid. Spring and fall are temperate, however, and the weather is perfect. There are outdoor sports to be enjoyed throughout the seasons, such as snowboarding, skiing, hiking, sky diving and paragliding.
How is public transit in Seoul?
It is very user friendly and cheap! The subway system is particularly awesome. There are nine subway lines, and a ninth is being constructed. If you look at a map of the Seoul subway, you will see that it reaches every neighbourhood in the city. English language maps are located at every subway station, too, so it’s easy to find your way around. The bus system is also very good, however it tends to be more confusing as there are many different kinds of buses (regular, community, express, etc.), however once you get the hang of it you will find it’s another cheap and convenient way to get around the city.
